A Penny's Worth of Thoughts, Vol. 3

Heroes.  When people hear the term, some think of fictional icons.  Spider-man. Hulk. Wolverine. Thor.  Maybe someone thinks of the hero of their favorite book or movie.  War veterans are also on peoples mind when it comes to heroes I'm sure.  But what about the everyday heroes that are around us?  Some of you probably started thinking firemen, policemen, or the EMT's in the ambulance, am I right?  While, yes, those people are heroes, it doesn't have to take a death defying or life saving feat to be a hero.

Heroes can be people who just help out others in their time of need.  Take for instance, the tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri back in May.  It was a tragic disaster that was all over the Weather channel for awhile, but the survivors and people for other cities around the U.S. came to help clean up the damage and rebuild.  I'm sure some may have even done even more if the could.  At the same time, take someone who helps someone pick up groceries they accidentally dropped at a supermarket.  An act of kindness on both a major and minor level, but could they not both be considered a heroic act?

A general kindness that I do is I help people with advice.  You would be surprised what people have needed advice on, but whatever the case, I advise them the best I can.  Take someone I helped Wednesday, who will remain anonymous unless they choose to reveal themselves.  They were having trouble missing someone special to them, apparently they had told the person that they liked them, and the person stopped talking to them for a while.  I advised them to talk to the person, however they could, saying that maybe they liked them too, just were afraid to show it at the time.  While they found out the person didn't feel the same way back, they also said that they felt closure now that they knew for sure.  Probably not what some would consider a heroic act, but, as with most anything else, it could depend on the perspective you look at it from.

In short, you'd be surprised how much a small kindness makes a big difference in someones life.  So, whether it's helping somebody out, advising on situations, remembering our fallen heroes, or just being there for someone, don't forget the everyday heroes.  You might not notice them as much as someone who's big and green, but that doesn't mean they aren't there, helping someone out.

Just a penny's worth of thoughts, for anyone who wants to read them.

  1. Very interesting topic. I love the idea of heros and I agree--while we think of SUPER heros, heros are really just average everyday people
